Happy Labor Day 2015!

Happy Labor Day 2015!
By Kimberly BishopSeptember 7, 2015

The Bishop Law Firm would like to wish you a Happy Labor Day 2015! We know that when most people think of Labor Day, they think of barbecues, the long weekend, great store sales and the fast approaching end of the summer. Today, we want to show appreciation to the real reason for Labor Day, the American worker!

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the first governmental recognition of American workers came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. Oregon was the first state to recognize Labor Day in 1887, followed by Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York.

By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. Via The U.S. Department of Labor

By creating a holiday celebrating the American worker, we established how important the American worker is for the economy and well-being of our nation. Thankfully, protections for workers have evolved a long way from where they were in 1894. Since our firm handles Social Security Disability cases, we can talk all day about how the Social Security Act protects workers who become disabled!

Thank you to all the hard working men and women of this country who arrive early and work late. Happy Labor Day!
