There have been many attacks on the Social Security Disability Program in the media recently quoting evidence from various "experts" about the Social Security Disability Program. These experts usually all come to the same conclusion: that the Social Security Disability program is a bad thing.
I am a country girl from Salisbury, North Carolina. My parents worked hard to take care of my family. When I was 14 years old, my father became very ill and could not work anymore. He applied for Social Security Disability. In the 1.5 years that it took him to get on disability, we lost our house, car and food was scarce. My dad lost his insurance but his doctor saw him for free because he knew my dad was sick.
When my dad finally was approved for disability, it was such a relief. It was a relief financially and emotionally. I received benefits off of my father's account. I saved that money and it helped me pay for some of my college. I later went to law school and now I am a Social Security Disability lawyer.
The point is that Social Security Disability does more than provide income to a disabled person. Its helps their family, including children who grow up to be tax payers. When the Social Security Act was written into law, it was for the purpose of protecting workers and their families who could no longer work. Still today, it serves that purpose.
The real "experts" on Social Security Disability are the hard working men and women of this country who have gotten sick and can no longer provide for their families. I wish that these so-called "experts" would spend some time with them.
